Orange de Sangre by Highbrow Vapor

Disclaimer: This E-liquid was provided to me free of charge for the purpose of conducting a review. This fact notwithstanding, I will, as best I'm able, provide an honest, accurate and unbiased assessment of this product. Portions of this review have been quoted from my review of Highbrow Vapor's Cheesecake Torte. http://vapour-taster.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/cheesecake-torte-by-highbrow-vapor.html Quoted portions are in italics.

Orange de Sangre is an e-liquid by Highbrow Vapor. http://highbrowvapor.com/ Sangre means blood in Spanish, and as there's a variety of orange called Blood Orange, I believe we can safely assume this is a Blood Orange flavoured E-liquid. Blood oranges are known for their distinctive crimson coloured flesh which is due to the presence of an antioxidant called Anthocyanin. Antioxidants in citrus fruits is apparently rare. In addition to the usual citrus notes, Blood Oranges are also said to have secondary raspberry-like notes to the flavour. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_orange This begs the question: Do we really have a Blood Orange flavoured E-liquid here or is it just an orange flavoured juice with an exotic sounding name?

Highbrow Vapor is a family owned and operated business in the United States who craft their e-liquids to order from the highest quality ingredients and take great pride in the authenticity of their flavours. They "use only 100% USP kosher food grade PG/VG and (their) nicotine is 99.9% pure pharmaceutical grade. (Their) juice is produced using aseptic technique by professionals using only ingredients deemed generally safe for human consumption by the FDA." http://highbrowvapor.com/ Their catalogue of liquids comprises forty five distinct flavours divided by the following categories: desserts, drinks, fruits and tobaccos.

Orange de Sangre (and indeed, each of the liquids in the Highbrow catalogue) is available in 10 ($7.50) and 30ml ($15.00) bottles at nicotine strengths of 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36mg and at 100% PG or 100% VG with the option for the customer to specify a PG/VG ratio of their own. The website also offers the option to further tailor the flavour of the liquid to suit the customer's preferences. There's 52 customer reviews with an average of 5/5 stars for this particular flavour, so it's obviously very popular and highly regarded.

The 10ml bottle is a clear, reasonably squeezable plastic with a white, childproof screw-top cap, underneath which is a standard dropper. The label features a sepia toned illustration of a gentleman in Regency (?) era clothing and sporting an extremely tall top hat. Information on the bottle includes the name of the company, the name of the liquid, liquid contents in ml, nicotine strength in mg, PG/VG content (in this case denoted as "mix"), the manufacturing date, a toxicity warning in the form of a skull and crossbones graphic, an advisory that the product "may contain nicotine" and a request to "keep out of the reach of children". The liquid is a clear, Lemon Chiffon yellow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_chiffon and has the consistency and texture of a light cooking oil. The aroma of the liquid is that of freshly pinched orange zest.

The Highbrow Vapor website has this to say about Orange de Sangre, "A crisp, clean, slightly tangy and refreshing twist on one of our favorite fruits." http://highbrowvapor.com/collections/fruit-flavors/products/orange-de-sangre-1

Let's get this out of the way; Orange de Sangre is one of the most authentic fruit flavoured e-liquids I've ever had the pleasure of tasting.

I'm vaping this juice in an Igo-L on a mechanical mod running on an 18650 battery. I inhale the vapour and I experience a mild sweetness on the tip of my tongue, but I taste a more acidic note a third of the way along the length of my tongue. My mouth fills with a general taste impression of citrus fruit, but it's not until I finish inhaling the vapour and follow it with a short intake of fresh air that the flavour of orange communicates itself to my conscious awareness. As I exhale, the taste is indeed "crisp, clean and slightly tangy". The flavour of orange is so remarkably like the actual fruit that it makes my mouth water. The word "crystalline" comes to mind when I think of the clear, undiluted, seemingly 100% natural flavour. The aftertaste is much as one would expect; there is even the residual, acidic tang on the tip of the tongue in the aftertaste.

Orange de Sangre has no throat hit to speak of but it does produce prodigious amounts of vapour.

Now, to the issue of Blood Oranges and the distinctive raspberry notes. If I wasn't looking for it I wouldn't notice raspberry notes in the flavour of this e-juice at all. Without any doubt whatsoever, the orange is the dominant note but I am also detecting a suggestion of raspberry. Just a whisper. Even if this juice was made from the essential oils of a regular orange and not from Blood Oranges as the name suggests, you might detect the presence of raspberry too, if only because we are highly suggestible creatures.

Whether this is an orange e-liquid or a Blood Orange liquid makes no difference at the end of the day. It's delicious, it tastes like the actual fruit, there's no hint whatsoever of any artificiality about it and you'll look like a steam train, vaping it. You'll be well rewarded for the money you spend on Orange de Sangre.
